Bright Start for Blues in the Conti Cup

Image
Photo by  Laura Burton It was Continental League Cup action for The Blues this weekend against WSL side Brighton. There was one change for The Blues, following last weekend's win against Coventry, with Lucy Quinn coming in to replace Charlie Devlin. Kick-off was delayed by half an hour, but it was more than worth the wait for Bluenoses!  Blues started the game well, closing Brighton down all over the pitch and playing the ball forward at every opportunity. It didn't take long for Blues to have their first chance when Christie Murray closed Brighton goalkeeper Megan Walsh down, forcing her to hurry her clearance. The ball reached Lucy Quinn, but her shot hit the post. Ten minutes later, Libby Smith turned her marker well and found herself one-on-one with the 'keeper but her shot was saved. At this point, Jade Pennock and Libby Smith were working exceptionally well together with Smith making some great runs and Pennock playing the through balls to find her. Their efforts pa

Blues End Record-Breaking Run Against Maidenhead

Image
Photo by  Michael South Photography The Blues were coming into this weekend's game record-breakers, with no other Chesterfield team in history starting a season ten games unbeaten. A 2-1 win away at Maidstone last weekend,  in which Darren Oldaker scored a last minute winner,  saw The Spireites set the new record. Spirits were high as fans had full belief this record could continue in a rare 3pm kick-off at The Technique Stadium. It felt like forever since we had a Saturday game at home, the last one being mid-August against Aldershot. However, Maidenhead are our 'bogey team' and sure enough, the record came to an end. It was a slow start to the game, in all honesty. Maidenhead seemed happy with slowing the game down and Chesterfield were finding themselves having to pass the ball around the back a lot to try and get out. There were a few chances going forward for Chesterfield, but mostly the ball found its way back to the half-way line, or even further back. Calvin Mi

Blues Bag Three Points in Local Derby

Image
Photo by  Laura Burton The Blues were back at St Andrew's this weekend for a local derby against Coventry United. Despite last weekend's defeat to Charlton, fans were optimistic and there was a good buzz around the ground. Just one change to the side from last weekend, with Gemma Lawley coming back from injury to start in defence. The Blues started off well, with good passing movements and were attacking well. Mollie Green came close to putting The Blues ahead in the 10th minute with a free-kick but it came back off the crossbar. It wasn't long before Blues took the lead though. Jade Pennock took the ball into the Coventry penalty area and calmly slotted the ball across the Coventry 'keeper, into the right hand corner to put The Blues 1-0 up in the 13th minute. With Blues on the front foot it seemed inevitable that they would score again, and that they did. Green whipped in a great corner and captain Louise Quinn rose highest to head the ball into the back of the net.

Blues Lose at The Valley

Image
Photo from  @BCFCWomen After a break in fixtures in respect of the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II, The Blues were back in action away to Charlton. A few of us managed to make the trip down to The Valley to cheer The Blues on, unable to wait any longer to see the team back on the pitch. After a pre-match chat with Blues manager Darren Carter and a couple of selfies, we were buzzing for the game to begin. A few injuries forced some changes to the team that beat Sunderland 4-0. Midfielder Mollie Green found herself in defence and the worst kept secret ever, new signing Charlie Escourt made her Blues debut in midfield. The Blues applied pressure from kick-off and came close in the first two minutes of the game when Charlie Devlin took the ball into the Charlton penalty area and took a shot that was well-saved by Sian Rogers in the Charlton net. The missed chance would unfortunately come back to bite The Blues just two minutes later when Blues failed to clear a Charlton cross and f orme

Spireites Stun Southend

Photo by  Michael South Photography Strap yourselves in, people, this was one heck of a game!  On the back of another two wins against Aldershot and Oldham, respectively, Chesterfield were sitting a point clear at the top of The National League. After a break over the weekend in respect of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, The Spireites were back in action at the Technique Stadium for another night game. Mid-table Southend Utd the visitors this time. Another game which has people saying “It’s not that long since this was a League One fixture!” Considering recent performances, this probably looked like it would be a comfortable win for Chesterfield, on paper. Try telling that to my notepad! The Shrimpers got off to the better start, but were unable to take their chance to put themselves ahead when Dan Mooney fired wide. After this, The Spireites took control of the game, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Joe Quigley had a shot veer wide of the post on the 11th minu

Un-FOUR-gettable Afternoon for The Blues

Image
Photo from @BCFCWomen  Slightly difficult to write about this one as, due to the game kicking off at 4pm on a Saturday, it wasn’t able to be shown on the FA Player due to the blackout rule for football between 3-5pm. Add to that, me not being able to get a train home if I went to Sunderland. Sunderland were playing a ‘double-header’ at The Stadium of Light, with their men’s team kicking off at 12:30pm and the hope was that a lot of the fans from that game would stay for the women’s fixture. This didn’t quite go to plan, one to write about another day. To make things even more difficult, BBC Radio Newcastle had issues with the commentary being streamed, a men’s football podcast being played instead. Sure enough, once the men’s football finished, the commentary for the game became available- just in time for the second half.   The Blues were already 1-0 up by then, with what sounded, well, read, like an excellent goal from Harriet Scott in the final minutes of the first half. Blues Buzzing After Beating The Bees

Image
Photo by  Michael South Photography Another game under the lights for the Spireites, with league leaders Barnet the visitors this time. It felt a bit different having Friday night football at the Technique Stadium, but considering we have a game on Monday it made sense. With Barnet top of the table and Chesterfield not managing to hold on to their 2-0 lead last weekend, this looked like it would be a tough test for Town, on paper. One change for the Spireites with Covolan coming back from suspension to replace Fitzsimons in net. 3-1 was my prediction before the game... Seeing as we found ourselves 1-0 up within two minutes, we'll start with a goal! Horton put a great cross in from the left hand side which reached King who took a shot on goal, but the ball was blocked, resulting in a Spireites corner. As the corner came in, it was just taken away from Asante, but it fell to Banks on the edge of the area who fired it into the bottom corner. A fantastic start for the Blues! Alth
